At the 88th Academy Awards, held in February 2016, the Best Visual Effects Oscar went to Ex Machina, whose effects team u2014 Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Ardington and Sara Bennett of Double Negative u2014 beat out heavy favorites like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road. It was widely seen as an upset at the time, since Ex Machina’s understated, character-driven effects work stood in sharp contrast to the blockbuster spectacle of its competitors.
