This Ex Machina Ava VFX work is a great example of digital erasure rather than full CG replacement. Alicia Vikander’s face, hands and voice stayed entirely real in the finished film; only the transparent torso, joints and internal mechanics were composited in around her actual performance. Ex Machina, written and directed by Alex Garland, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 88th Oscars in 2016, beating bigger-budget competitors like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road.
