ILM had to come up with brand new visual effects advancements to achieve the de-aging process used on Netflix’s “The Irishman”. check out the process here:
ILM visual effects supervisor Pablo Helman led the Irishman de-aging technique, and it broke from the industry playbook. Rather than covering Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci’s faces in tracking markers and filming them in helmet-mounted rigs u2014 the approach used to de-age Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 u2014 Helman’s team built a specialized multi-camera rig that captured each actor’s performance with no markers at all. That let the three leads act together on set, in character, while ILM handled the age transformation entirely in post-production across a story spanning five decades. Helman discussed the process in detail with NPR shortly after the film’s release.
