Iorek Byrnison, the armored panserbjørn who fights alongside young Lyra Belacqua, was built and animated almost entirely with CG for this His Dark Materials bear fight, since a fully practical polar bear of that scale and expressiveness wasn’t an option. Framestore’s team combined detailed fur simulation, water and snow interaction, and motion-captured performance to give the character weight and personality across the show’s first season, based on Philip Pullman’s novel trilogy.
