In the 2021, audiences were treated to a new vision of the classic science fiction novel Dune, from acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve. The film was met with mixed reviews, but one aspect that nearly all critics could agree on was the impressive visual effects. This video discussion will take a look at the visual effects process behind some of the most iconic scenes from the film.

Dune’s visual effects were led by DNEG, with production VFX supervisor Paul Lambert overseeing the team profiled in this Dune VFX breakdown. Their work won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Oscars in March 2022 u2014 DNEG’s seventh win in the category. Working alongside special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer, the team combined practical sets, models and desert location photography with large-scale digital environments for Arrakis, plus the film’s sandworms and ornithopters.
