This Rango VFX making of documentary covers ILM’s first fully animated feature film, and by the studio’s own admission, animation wasn’t exactly their comfort zone going in. Well, now they know.
Directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp as the title chameleon, Rango (2011) leaned on ILM’s live-action VFX experience to give its Old West animal cast a gritty, photoreal texture rarely seen in animated films at the time. The gamble paid off: Rango won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 84th Oscars.
