Getting a job at a VFX house is easier if you know the tools and have a solid portfolio. The following VFX schools have a track record of placing students at some of the best studios, with graduates creating mind-blowing work.

Studios hire off the demo reel. A school can’t make your reel for you, but it can give you deadlines, weekly feedback from working artists and an introduction to recruiters. That time and access is what you pay for, and the price swings wildly from school to school.

Every price below was checked against the school’s own website on October 9, 2026. Schools raise tuition most years, so confirm before you apply.

Campus programs first. Totals include required fees where the school publishes them. Housing, food and a workstation are extra everywhere.

SCAD’s number is the 2026-27 full-time rate, and the four-year figure assumes tuition never goes up, which it will. VFS, Think Tank and Escape Studios list their prices on their program pages. Escape’s figures are for September 2027 entry.

Self-taught

The core tools all have free versions now. Blender is free and open source. Houdini Apprentice is free for non-commercial learning, with watermarked, size-capped renders. Nuke Non-commercial is free, with output capped at 1920×1080 and no third-party plug-ins. Fusion still ships free inside DaVinci Resolve. Our list of free node-based compositing tools covers the rest.

The hard part is feedback. Nobody tells you your edges are soft or your sim has no sense of scale until a recruiter passes on your reel. If you go this route, post work in progress publicly, ask for critiques and set yourself real deadlines. One paid mentorship term at the end to polish the reel costs far less than a full program.

Online

Online programs sell structure and mentors for less money. Think Tank’s online diploma runs the same 64 weeks as its campus program at well under half the price. You need your own workstation, you study around the rest of your life, and you have to work harder to build relationships with classmates and instructors.

Campus

Campus schools put you in a room with other students, instructors and a render farm every day. The big ones sit in VFX hubs like Los Angeles, Vancouver and London, where studios recruit locally. Campus VFX places its compositing students inside local studios for a two-month practicum. Gnomon and SCAD grant accredited degrees, which can matter if you need a work visa to move countries later. Campus is also the most expensive option by a wide margin, and rent in those cities adds a lot.

Recent student reels

The fastest way to judge a school is to watch what its students made this year. Look at the discipline you want to work in, not the flashiest shot.

Gnomon

About 12 minutes of work from Gnomon’s degree and certificate students. Gnomon keeps every student reel back to 2014 on its school reels page and YouTube channel, so you can see how the work has changed year to year.

Think Tank Training Centre

The 2026 showcase leans toward assets and environments. For simulation work, watch the school’s Houdini VFX Student Showcase 2025.

Escape Studios

Escape posts separate reels for VFX, 3D animation and character work. This is the VFX one.

All compositing. That tells you what the school is built around. Its FX TD and lighting students post separate reels on the same channel.

Films graduates have worked on

Schools publish these numbers themselves, usually around the Oscars. Treat them as marketing, but they’re specific enough to check against IMDb.

Vancouver Film School

VFS says 173 of its alumni worked on films nominated at the 2026 Oscars, 112 of them on winners. The biggest counts were Avatar: Fire and Ash (47 alumni), Jurassic World: Rebirth (34), KPop Demon Hunters (24), Sinners (10), F1 (8) and Zootopia 2 (6). Those totals cover every VFS program, including film production and sound, not only 3D and VFX.

SCAD

SCAD says 79 of its visual effects graduates worked on 2026 Oscar-recognized films, including every Best Visual Effects nominee. Johnathan Nixon (BFA, visual effects, 2007), a senior head of department at Weta FX, helped lead the water simulations on Avatar: Fire and Ash. A year earlier, Steve Bevins (BFA, visual effects, 2013) was a VFX department supervisor on Wicked, and Yukinori Inagaki (MFA, visual effects, 2008) was character rigging lead on The Wild Robot.

Escape Studios

Escape Studios says its alumni worked on all five 2026 Best Visual Effects nominees: Avatar: Fire and Ash, F1, Jurassic World: Rebirth, The Lost Bus and Sinners. It counted six alumni on F1 and four on Sinners. Older credits it lists include Dune, 1917, No Time to Die and Interstellar.

Gnomon

Gnomon reports a 98% placement rate for its BFA and 79% for its certificate, using the definitions of its accreditor, ACCSC. It doesn’t publish a running film list. Named alumni include Jay Machado, a senior modeler at ILM, and Cesar Quijada and Florin Boieriu, whom Gnomon congratulated for their work on The BFG. Certificate graduate Tefft Smith II has credits on Kong: Skull Island, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Tomorrowland.

Campus VFX (Lost Boys)

In 2019 the school listed recent alumni credits on Dumbo, Captain Marvel, Alita: Battle Angel, Aquaman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and First Man. Graduate Edmond Boulet-Gilly went on to work as an FX TD at Sony Pictures Imageworks.

Think Tank Training Centre

Think Tank tracks hires instead of film titles. It reports more than 100 industry hires since January 2025 across 60-plus studios. Eighteen of those studios work in film, TV or VFX, and more than 40 make games.

Online schools

None of the online schools here publish a verifiable list of film credits. Ask admissions for the names of recent graduates, then look them up on LinkedIn and IMDb.

Picking a school

  • Watch the last two years of student reels in the discipline you want.
  • Ask how the school defines placement. A bare percentage on a landing page means less than one tied to an accreditor’s rules.
  • Ask who teaches the final portfolio term, and whether they still work in production.
  • Add rent, a workstation and software to tuition before you compare prices.
  • Find out if the program includes a practicum or studio visits.
